Panama Canal expansion workers returned to work Monday after agreeing to new terms with their contractor, ending their weeklong strike. About 6,000 workers walked off the job last week, halting construction on the locks, a key element of the expansion which will allow much larger ships to use the waterway. The existing canal also continued to operate normally during the strike. The Panama Canal handles about 5% of world trade.

American Shipper reports that the Obama administration on Wednesday unveiled its global supply chain security strategy on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The document is a whole-of-government approach towards balancing security and international trade that acknowledges to properly manage cross-border commerce extends beyond the Department of Homeland Security. The objective is to have a holistic approach for preventing, mitigating and responding to supply chain disruptions from manmade causes such as terrorism or natural disasters.
The strategy identifies gaps in the roles and responsibilities of federal and state agencies, and private sector stakeholders, and recommends legislative, regulatory and organizational changes to address them. The document guides the government’s interaction with the private sector and foreign governments, and how it allocates resources in the budget. Officials originally planned to complete the strategy late last summer, but getting all the necessary approvals took longer than expected. The global Supply Chain Plan can be found at:

Canada Further Expands Sanctions Against Syria January 26, 2012

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird on Wednesday announced new sanctions against Syria’s Assad regime in concert with like-minded countries:
“We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to isolate this reprehensible regime.
“Assad and those supporting him must get the message that peace-loving nations of the world are working together to end the regime’s oppressive rule. “These latest measures include an assets freeze on, and a prohibition on dealings with, 29 additional individuals and entities associated with the Assad regime. “We are also providing for new exemptions to minimize the impact on ordinary citizens. “We welcome the Arab League observers’ report and the League’s proposal to have Assad move aside, paving the way for free elections; the League’s actions are all the more important given the inability, to this point, of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address the crisis in Syria. “Sanctions imposed by like-minded partners, including the United States, the European Union and the Arab League, are having an impact by isolating the regime.
